What We Know
In October 2022, Statistics Canada released data on victims of family and intimate partner violence, based on police-reported incidents across the country. It tells us a little bit about the situation in New Brunswick.From 2009 to 2021, reported family violence increased by 39% in New Brunswick.
Intimate partner violence is a serious concern in Canada. Data released by Statistics Canada shows that in 2020:
73% of homicide victims killed by a current or former spouse or intimate partner were women.
1 in 10 homicides, or 10% of homicides in Canada, is committed by a current or former spouse or partner.
80% of victims of a solved homicide knew their killer.
According to data from the Gender-Based Violence Knowledge Centre,
In 2018, 44% of women reported experiencing some form of intimate partner violence (IPV) in their lifetime.
In 2019 in Canada, of the 107,810 people aged 15 years and older who experienced IPV, 79% were women.
According to the same study, 29% of women aged 15 to 24 reported experiencing at least one incident of IPV in the 12 months preceding the survey.
Women living in Canada are almost four times more likely than men to have been sexually assaulted at least once since the age of 15 (30% versus 8% respectively).
